Week 16

I love position night.  Everything changes.  Change is good, right?  Congrats to Tom & Russ who played hard all season to stay within shooting distance of the lead, and then just well enough the last match, to gain the outright lead at the end.  Rich and Mark also came from behind at the end to make up 2 places in the standings.

Next Tuesday, weather permitting, we'll have our final event.  This will be a 9-hole Team Scramble tournament and will be flighted, A, B, C based on the average of your teams handicaps.  There will be prizes for each flight for both the tournament, Pink Ball competition, and the Skins Game.  There will be the Closest To targets on holes 3 & 7 as well.  I'll have a hand out at the check-in to summarize it.

When you return after your round we'll have someone taking your scores and posting them on the board.  You'll get your prize money envelope for the year and then you can enjoy an open bar while we wait for the others.  Someone can start a bean bag tournament if you want.  Carley, their food and beverage director,  is preparing a special menu for us, a selection of appetizers and entrees that is sure to please.  This is the time for us to say thank you to our servers.  I'm sure you'll be generous. When everyone has returned from their round, we'll award the prizes for the tournament and have a little discussion about next year.

Here are the results for the week:

                              Hole #3                  George Lockwood

Week 15

The rough was freshly mowed and lower than I've ever seen it.  This led to a good number of low scores posted this week, four of them in the 30's.  Adam Jacobsen shot par and carded an eagle, our first and only eagle this year, on the first hole.  A well positioned drive, left him with a 4-iron into the green.  He was left with a 15 foot putt which he drained for the eagle.  Congrats to Adam.  This pays $25.00 if you were wondering.  (An ace pays $50.00)

Next Tuesday will be position night.  The Standings Report won't be posted until Monday because I have to wait for any make-up rounds to be played through Sunday.  You are encouraged to play your opponent head to head if you wish.  You are not required to do so.

Here are the results for the week:

 WEEK 14

We are coming up on the end of our season.  Week 16, which will be played on September 1st, will be position night to determine the final standings for the 2nd half.  You are welcome to challenge your opponent to play head to head that night.  We will have two play dates after that, Sept. 8th and Sept. 16, providing there are no additional rainouts.  We will hold a team event on the 8th in which you will alternate your shots.  I will provide more details on this when the time comes.  And the final night, we'll hold a tournament played man to man.  Both tournaments will be flighted so that you will be playing against other teams or individuals with the same skill level.

WEEK 13

We've extended our season 2 weeks to make up for the days we lost due to rain.  The season will end on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009.  The eighth week of the 2nd half will fall on Sept. 1st, which was the original ending date of the league.  This will be position nite to determine the final standings for the league.  If we have no further rain-outs we will hold tournaments on the following Tuesday play dates.  Further detail will follow about how these tournaments will be conducted.  We've also decided to make a change in how we conduct the ending festivities.  Rather than drag it out for another 2 hours going back to Beggars,  we'll have something short and sweet right at Waters Edge GC.  After you finish your tournament round that day, the league will pay for your drinks while we wait for everyone else to return.  The 2nd half prizes will be given out to you when you arrive.  We will not be providing dinner, except for maybe some hors d'oeuvres.  For those wanting a meal, you can order from the menu and we'll make sure they'll have something tasty on Special that nite.  After everyone returns from their round we'll tally up the results and award the tournament prizes and call it a night.  This will allow everyone to get home earlier and allow more prize money to be distributed.

Here are the results for the week:

A near ace by George Lockwood on the 3rd hole has me thinking of what the proper procedure should be for placing the Closest To sign.  Here's the situation:  Georges' shot landed on the front of the green an rolled up to an inch or two and directly in front of the hole.  After the high fives and the putting were completed, George placed the sign where his ball had come to rest.  Another group of golfers came along and moved the sign to the back of the hole, an equal distance away; with the thought that the distance was all that mattered and that the sign should not be blocking the hole.  Odds of this all happening are remote, of course.  But there are those that argue that it should be left in front of the hole.  This would be kinda like the old Stymie rule, where you were not required to mark your ball and your opponent was blocked from a direct route to the hole. Then I got to thinking; what if someone hit the sign post, anywhere on the green, and it ricocheted into the hole?  Would you classify this an ace and claim the prize.  Of course not.  I would expect most people would place the ball somewhere past the sign where it probably would have come to rest.  Likewise, I think it was the right thing to do, in moving the flag to the back of the hole.  I'd hate to think that in leaving the sign in front of the hole, that I had prevented someone from getting an ace, regardless of how improbable this would be.  I even rotate the sign face 90 degrees so that you minimize the chance of hitting it. Your thoughts or comments are always welcome.

JULY 29, 2009

I've got a lot of catching up to do.  The virus scare is over.  Our website manager has scanned his computer and the website for viruses and found no infections, so I can now publish the results for the last 3 weeks of the season, the beginning weeks of our 2nd half.

The 1st week of the 2nd half was played on July 14, 2009 with the following results:

            Mark Graczyk         #9                        3           "

Thom Larson, after shooting par on the front nine, went on to shoot a 76 that day, his best round of golf ever.  Congrats Thom!

Finally, last Tuesday, July 28th rain and thunder threatened again, but everyone managed to finish their rounds.  This week it was the Mark Graczyk show, with Mark winning all the skins and the prize for low net.  Here are the details:

Closest To

                              Hole #3                  Tom Biltgen

                              Hole #7                  Kevin Larson

Week 8

Position Night turned the standings around considerably.  The winners and runners up for the 1st half are our newcomers.  1st and 2nd place flip flopped.  Eberhardt and Mueller had held 1st place since the 1st week. But, Joe Gross shot a 39 for the final event and his partner Roger Pawlik maintained his average.  Matt Mueller and Fred Eberhardt were at their averages which wasn't good enough.  The Marquez's went from 6th to 4th and Larsons from 8th to 6th.  The rest of us in the top 10 kinda fell on our faces or had team-mates on vacation.   For those new to the league, prize money for how you finished in the standings for the 1st and 2nd halves will be awarded at our banquet on the final night.

Here is how the prizes will be awarded for Week 8:

   Closest To

Leroy Pappageorge                       Hole 3  (another near ace)

               Thom Larson                                       7

SKINS

                   Thom Larson              Hole  #3                       Birdie

                   Tom Biltgen                         #4                      Birdie

The Larsons wanted everyone to know about the upcoming match play tournament held every year in Laporte, In., this year on July 18 & 19, and 25 & 26. The cost is $65 for everything for 2-4 potential days of golf depending on whether you advance. It always is held when I'm on vacation or I would go.

I will be leaving on a 2 week vacation and won't return until 7/25/09.  There will not be any scores calculated or standings posted or published until I get back.  Don't forget that your 2nd half dues of $65 will be expected on my 1st night back.

Good Luck everyone,

Rob

PS:  I'm still looking to sell some raffle tickets for St. Terrence's Super Raffle.  Grand Prize is $10,000.  The donation would be $50, split with your partner and it would only be $25.

Week 7

Another cool and drizzly day greeted everyone for our 3-club challenge last week.  The majority of our members tried putting with something other than their putter.  It worked for some and not for others.  But what continues to amaze me is how little the scores change.  Food and drink was enjoyed by all afterwards on the patio.

Here is how the prizes will be awarded for our 3-Club Challenge:

Rick Swierck    Low Gross              40                    $25.00

Rick Swierck    Low Net                 33                    $15.00

Tom Biltgen     Low Net                 33                    $15.00

Fred Marquez  Low Net                 33                     $15.00

Fred & Mike Marquez    Team Low Net   68                           $50.00

              Closest To     #3        Kyle Ohlendorf

              Closest To     #7        Tom Biltgen

We've been experiencing some problems with scorecards getting turned in.  Some have gone missing.  To alleviate the problem we will have a box sitting on the left side of the bar counter marked "St. Terrence Scorecards" for you to place your scorecards in.  This should be the only place your card should go; not to the bartender, not to the personnel in the pro shop, just in the box.

This Tuesday, July 7th will be our 8th event and will conclude the 1st half of our split season.  You are encouraged, but not required, to play your opponent head to head.  The standings going into this event will be posted on the bulletin board so that teams can see who they are pitted against. They will also be posted on our website, but I don't know if they will be published in time for everyone to see

I will also be leaving on a 2 week vacation and won't return until 7/25/09.  There will not be any scores calculated or standings posted or published until I get back.

Good Luck everyone,

Rob

Week 6

We were rained out for the 2nd time this year.  I always book us for 18 weeks and allow for two rainouts.  Now that we've used them up, we can either shorten the season or add a few Tuesdays to the end of our schedule.  The weather is typically nicer these days in September and I've already cleared it with Waters Edge for an additional 3 weeks if needed.

The rainouts have also affected the way I had the cookout planned.  Originally, it was going to coincide with the beginning of the 2nd half with the 3-club tournament.  Since the 2nd half wouldn't occur til I'm on vacation, we'll keep the cookout on the same date, June 30th, and still hold the 3-club tournament that day.  The Tuesday following the cookout will be position nite for the 1st half, unless we have another rainout!

For those of you new to the league, on position nite, you are encouraged to play your opponent head to head.

See you next week

Rob

Week 5

Playing conditions this week were a bit challenging.  We had a pretty stiff breeze and the rough on several of the holes was US Open height.  I know. because on the first hole I cut the corner a little too much, hit an over hanging branch and dropped down in the rough before the trap.  Never did find my ball.  But Thom Larson played well again this week winning a skin and both Closest To awards.

I polled the league members of St. Terrence who have email, about a new rule we've put in place.  It reads "No prize money will be awarded for any handicap based prize to any new member until the 2nd half of the season."  This will apply to the weekly prize for Low Net and the overall team standings for the 1st half.  I was finding that the net scores of many or all of the numerous new players we have this year, were skewed because of how few events they are based on.  The software actually goes back 10 events (5 of last years events at this point) and throws out the lowest 2 and highest 3 scores and then computes the average on the remaining 5 scores.  Therefore, it wouldn't be fair to the rest of us to award handicap prizes to someone with only 3 or 4 scores.  At the end of the first half I will use the handicap established after the 8 events for the newcomers and apply this factor to their scores to determine the team standings.

Here are the prize winners for Week 4:

                        Closest To The Pin             Hole

                        Thom Larson                                    #3

                        Thom Larson                                    #7

                        Thom Larson                                    #2      birdie

                        Rob Ohlendorf                                  #6      birdie

                        Dave Oehrlein                                   #8      birdie

                      Low Net

                       Randy Williams Jr.                           41/31

See you next week

Rob

Week 4.1

The best performance this week was from Thom Larson who birdied the first and the last hole to win the only skins and split Low Net honors with 41/32.  Must be that new GPS toy he's using.

Bernie Hartigan made his return to the league this week, although his official role won't begin until the 2nd half.  He is recovering from hip surgery and has been invited to join us whenever he wants to get his swing back in shape before replacing Jim Lyons partner at the half.  I hear he usually has to use a cane to walk, but he shot a 47 guys, with a bum hip!  Way to go Bernie.

Here are the prize winners for Week 4:

                        Closest To The Pin             Hole

                        Rick Swierk                                        #3

                        Chris Pappageorge                              #7

                        Skins Game

                        Thom Larson                                    #1      birdie

                        Thom Larson                                    #9      birdie

See you next week

Rob

Week 4

May 26, 2009

We were rained out this week.  Only 2 foursomes teed off before the deluge occurred.  Waters Edge has the ability to notify anybody out on the course, via the GPS monitor in the cart ,of any announcements.  When we made the decision to cancel the event, a message to this effect was sent out to the two groups that had managed to play a few holes, notifying them of the cancellation.  Anyone that paid their greens fees and/or skins entry fee and did not play, was instructed to obtain a "rain check" from the course which can be used to pay for next weeks round or any round of your choosing.  The course is holding the skins money it collected and anyone additional wanting to get in the skins game when we play next Tuesday can still get in.  This round will not be made up.  We will utilize one of our rain-out dates and Event #4 will be held next Tuesday, June 2nd.  Call me if you have any questions.

Week 3

May 19, 2009

Week  2

May 12, 2009

We had another beautiful spring day for golf.  One of the new guys (Joe Gross) won some prize money; the “Closest To” on hole #3.  Also, welcome back to Team Nike.  Rich and Mark got off to a good start with some low numbers and a couple skins for Mr. Ross.  Way to go guys.

Just a reminder to everyone to show respect for our new home,  like repairing ball marks on the greens and using the babbas out on the fairways (look it up, that’s what those jars on the side of your cart are called, I think its an Mayan word for replenish the earth or something).

And finally, I will be promoting the St Terrence raffle over the next few weeks.  The cost is $50.00 per ticket and can be split up among team members or any other combination you want.  1st prize pays out $10,000.  There are only 600 tickets being sold, which is pretty good odds when you compare it to the lotto.

You will not see any standings reports or skins reports until the fourth week.  During this period, all of the new handicaps are evening themselves out.  On the 4th week I’ll also be able to announce who won the prizes for the low net scores for the first 4 weeks.  So there’ll be some retroactive monies coming.

WELCOME

Opening Day

May 5, 2009

A beautiful spring day greeted each of our returning golfers this year along with 8 new members to our league.   But we lost about as many members as we gained , so our roster will remain the same; somewhere around 20 teams.  When the roster has righted itself and we know who is here to stay, I’ll publish the roster for everyone.

There were some bumpy greens that haven’t recovered enough yet.  That and the usual out of practice blues resulted in somewhat inflated scores for most of us.  At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Squirrel was making some pretty big claims before the round.  He was positive he was going to win a skin.  I guess wishing can sometimes make it come true.  He birdied the 1st hole.  Him and his partner Chuck Potter were the only ones to win the skins.m

Closest To on #3

Roger Pawlik      (congrats to the new guy)

Closest To on #7

Chuck Potter

How ‘bout that Randy Williams; playing golf with the port for his chemo still in his chest.  He says he hit a few balls the day before and it didn’t hurt, so what the heck, we’ll give it a try!  God bless ‘em.  And you thought you were a golf fanatic!

You will not see any standings reports or skins reports until the fourth week.  During this period, all of the new handicaps are evening themselves out.  On the 4th week I’ll also be able to announce who won the prizes for the low net scores for the first 4 weeks.  So there’ll be some retroactive monies coming.

For those that didn’t read the rules, the mid-season cookout is scheduled for June 30, the 9th week.  This will be the day we play the 3-club challenge.  I’ve also added a new rule that says that the league will not issue any prize money until their prize fund payment has been made.  That’s all for now, see you next week.

March 26, 2009

It's that time of year again.  I've been getting calls about this years golf league, so it's time to get the word out about the start of this years opening day.  I don't know of any changes that will take place.  We are returning to Water's Edge G.C. on Tuesday May 5th, 2009.  Tee times for the league begin at 3:30pm and continue thru 5:00pm for the 1st day of an 18 week season.  Actually, we have 16 weeks  of league competition and an additional 2 weeks built in for rainouts and/or tournaments.  The last play date for the league is September 1st.

The greens fees remain the same at $15.00 to walk and $25.00 to ride.  Everyone is expected to pay half of the $130.00 prize fund on opening day and the 2nd installment will be made at the end of June.  You can also pay the full amount on day 1 if you like.  Weekly prizes will be awarded for the individual(s) with the low net for the week.  A weekly prize will also be awarded to those that are Closest To The Pin on holes #3 and #7.  We always have a mid-season barbeque after our round somewhere around the end of June, in which your wife or significant other is also invited.  The season ends with some tournaments and an awards banquet.

We always have teams come and go.  There is usually always a few openings for new teams to join in, and this year is no exception.  If you are considering joining the league this year for the 1st time, it is important to call me as soon as possible to discuss the requirements (No, it has nothing to do with how good a golfer you are.  We take all comers.)  Singles wanting to be paired up to form a team (we play with 2-man teams) are welcome to apply but we cannot guarantee you a spot without a partner.  It is also equally important for returning teams to inform me of their intent to play, so that I know if we are reaching our limit.

It's less than 5 weeks away.  I'm just as anxious as you are, and look forward to seeing all of you again.  Give me a call or email me when you can.  The cell phones always on.
